Aurora Network Recovers
Aurora Mainnet Recovers After Outage, Team Silent Amidst 99% TVL Decline

Key Points
1
Outage timeline and on-chain evidence: Aurora’s mainnet went offline at 02:16:11 UTC on July 20, 2026 and returned by 05:12 UTC the same day; after recovery, on-chain data showed blocks resuming with 11 consecutive blocks produced in about seven seconds and at least one block containing a live transaction.
2
No public root cause or post-mortem has been published yet; Aurora’s team account had not issued a statement as of the recovery reports.
3
Total value locked (TVL) has collapsed by about 99% since its 2022 peak, from roughly $2.5 billion to around $4.65 million, underscoring a much-diminished activity footprint.
4
Aurora remains the NEAR-based bridge for Ethereum applications (an EVM-compatible network on NEAR) and was launched in 2021, raising about $12 million from investors including Pantera Capital, Electric Capital, and Dragonfly Capital.
5
Outages of this kind are not uncommon in the broader EVM ecosystem, and there have been no reported losses tied to the incident, according to early monitoring and reporting.
Aurora's mainnet went dark at 02:16 UTC on July 20, 2026, halting all transaction processing on the NEAR-based Ethereum-compatible network. Service was restored by 05:12 UTC — roughly three hours later — according to Coinlaw and CryptoRank, with on-chain data confirming 11 consecutive blocks produced in about seven seconds after recovery.
No official explanation has been issued. The Aurora team had not published a statement or post-mortem as of the recovery reports, leaving users and developers without a clear picture of what went wrong. Crypto Briefing noted the network was offline for hours with no word from its team.
Three Hours of Silence With No Official Word
Blockchain monitoring service Onchain Lens flagged the outage first, according to CryptoRank. The halt was a full chain stop — no blocks, no transactions. After recovery, at least one block contained a live transaction, confirming the network was processing again. No user losses have been reported.
Aurora is an EVM-compatible layer built on NEAR Protocol. EVM stands for Ethereum Virtual Machine — it lets developers run Ethereum apps on other blockchains. Aurora launched in 2021 and raised about $12 million from investors including Pantera Capital, Electric Capital, and Dragonfly Capital, according to Bloomingbit.
TVL Has Collapsed 99% From Its 2022 Peak
The outage arrives as Aurora's network activity sits near historic lows. Total value locked — the amount of money held in the network's smart contracts — has fallen from roughly $2.5 billion in 2022 to about $4.65 million today. That is a drop of more than 99%, according to Crypto Times.
The collapse in TVL means far fewer users and far less money were affected by Monday's outage than would have been in Aurora's prime. Bloomingbit reported the incident drew limited outside attention, largely because of how much the network has shrunk. The low activity footprint softened the immediate impact.
EVM Outages Are Common, But Silence Is Not Reassuring
Chain halts are not rare across the EVM ecosystem. Networks built on shared infrastructure can go down for a few hours and recover without lasting damage. Coinlaw noted analysts view outages of this kind as notable but not unusual in the broader space.
What stands out here is the silence. No root cause. No timeline. No post-mortem. For a network still positioning itself as a bridge for Ethereum developers on NEAR, the lack of communication raises questions about governance and reliability. Crypto Briefing flagged this absence of official response as a key concern during the outage itself.
Aurora's Role on NEAR Hangs on Trust It Has Yet to Rebuild
Aurora still serves as NEAR Protocol's main on-ramp for Ethereum developers. But with TVL near zero and no transparency around a three-hour chain halt, the path forward is unclear. Investors like Pantera Capital backed Aurora when it raised $12 million in 2021, according to Bloomingbit. The network is a fraction of what it once was.
Crypto Times noted that analysts see the incident as a sign of Aurora's diminished footprint rather than a systemic crisis. Still, for any developer still building on Aurora, a silent three-hour outage with no explanation is hard to ignore.
