Xbox Insiders Receive Longer Gamertags, Cloud Streaming During Updates, and Enhanced Wishlist

A new 'Add to wishlist' button now appears next to 'Add to Play later' on game cards, enabling quick wishlist additions without leaving the card.
Mobile wishlist alerts were introduced in April, complementing the ability to add both released and upcoming games directly from game cards.
Cloud streaming during game updates is gated by Game Pass availability; you can launch cloud play for cloud-enabled titles and see a 'launch via cloud' option on the game card during installs.
The Alpha Skip-Ahead rollout includes a built-in channel for feedback via Microsoft's Player Voice portal as these features are tested before broader Insider release.
Microsoft is letting Xbox Insiders with longer names finally breathe. The company raised the unique gamertag character limit from 12 to 15 — a 25% expansion — as part of a new update rolling out to the Alpha Skip-Ahead testing ring, according to Xbox Wire. The build, numbered 2608, also adds Xbox 360 game hubs to game cards and lets players stream a game via cloud while it downloads.
The changes come under Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who has pushed the brand toward fixing everyday frustrations for players, according to Thurrott. Insiders can submit feedback through Microsoft's Player Voice portal at aka.ms/XBOXplayervoice as the features are tested before a wider rollout.
The 12-character limit dates back to June 2019, when Microsoft overhauled gamertags to support over 200 languages and Unicode characters. That system added a suffix — like "Name#1234" — to keep names unique, which forced a shorter cap to fit the full string in the UI, according to Neowin. Unique, Latin-script gamertags can now reach 15 characters. Non-unique names and non-Latin-script names stay at 12, due to higher byte counts those characters require.
The 16-character total rendered limit for modern gamertags — 12 characters, a "#", and a 3-digit suffix — explains why unique tags can safely expand to 15 without breaking existing UI layouts, VGChartz reported. The Player Voice portal received over 5,000 feedback votes on this issue within its first month, showing strong community demand for the change.
Xbox 360 titles previously lacked the full "Game Hub" experience that Xbox One and Series X|S games had. That meant achievement hunters had to launch a game or dig through profile menus just to check progress. The new update adds Xbox 360 game hubs directly to game cards, letting players view achievement progress, captures, and detailed achievement popups without leaving the home screen, according to Windows Report.
The move is being called a "huge buff" for achievement hunters by the tracking community, who praise the detailed 360 achievement popups as proof Microsoft is not walking away from its backwards compatibility legacy, despite closing older digital storefronts. The update pushes for "UI parity" across all console generations — a goal that has been missing for years.
One of the most practical new features lets players stream a game through the cloud while it installs in the background. When a game needs an update or is mid-download, a "launch via cloud" option now appears directly on the game card — but only for cloud-enabled titles and only for Game Pass subscribers, according to MP1st. The goal is to cut "install abandonment," the point where players lose interest during a long 100GB download.
Tech outlets like Kotaku have flagged a real concern: downloading a large game update while streaming at 1080p or 4K can starve the stream of bandwidth, causing stuttering or dropped resolution for users without fast fiber connections. Microsoft has not addressed minimum speed requirements publicly. The feature is still in testing with Alpha Skip-Ahead Insiders, who are the highest-tier Xbox testing group.
The update also expands the wishlist feature. A new "Add to Wishlist" button now sits next to the "Add to Play Later" option directly on game cards. Players can wishlist both released and upcoming games without leaving the card, according to Neowin. This builds on mobile wishlist alerts introduced in April 2024, which notify players of sales and Game Pass additions through the Xbox mobile app.
All of these features — longer gamertags, 360 game hubs, cloud play during installs, and the expanded wishlist — are live now for Alpha Skip-Ahead Insiders. Microsoft plans to extend them to other Xbox Insider rings afterward before a broad release, VGChartz noted. Sharma's leadership team has framed the update as part of a wider push to retain its 25 million-plus Game Pass subscribers through everyday quality-of-life improvements.
