Google opens its smart home ecosystem to third-party artificial intelligence agents.

Google said early testers have used Home MCP to ask what children did after returning from school, with the agent combining summaries and relevant clips from cameras across the home. Other demonstrations included counting weekly laundry loads, tracking how long lights were on, and sending an audio announcement through a Google Home speaker when a task is finished.
Setting up Home MCP requires users to create and configure a Google Cloud project, give the selected agent the MCP configuration data, and then sign in to Google and approve the requested permissions. Google said setup instructions will also be published in the Google Home Developer Center.
The $20-per-month Google Home Premium Advanced plan also costs $200 annually and includes longer video-event history, descriptive notifications and detailed alerts, video-archive search, and daily summaries.
Beyond consumer device control, Google’s Home MCP developer server includes a “search_documents” tool for retrieving documentation. Its endpoint can be used without authentication for testing, while production deployments can be protected with Google Cloud API-key authentication.
The integration is also compatible with developer-oriented clients such as Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot running through VS Code, extending Home MCP beyond consumer-facing assistants.
