Grammy-winning singer and Broadway composer Duncan Sheik is hospitalized in critical condition.

Sheik has released nine studio albums during his music career.
The upcoming production of “Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen” is scheduled to begin previews on Nov. 27, officially open Dec. 17 at Studio Seaview and run through Feb. 14, 2027.
“Spring Awakening,” co-written with Steven Sater, originally featured Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and John Gallagher Jr.; it was later revived in 2015 by Deaf West Theatre under director Michael Arden.
The planned “Spring Awakening” revival will be directed by Danya Taymor, whose other directing credits include “The Outsiders.”
Sheik is also known for work as an actor, in addition to his career as a singer-songwriter and composer.
Singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik is hospitalized in New York City in critical but stable condition, according to a statement from his family on Instagram. The 56-year-old artist, known for his 1996 hit "Barely Breathing" and his Tony Award-winning work on Broadway's "Spring Awakening," has not disclosed the cause of his hospitalization. His family has requested privacy and promised updates when appropriate.
Sheik rose to fame in 1996 with "Barely Breathing," a Grammy-nominated single that became his signature song. Beyond his music career, he won a Tony Award for composing the original "Spring Awakening" with Steven Sater, which featured breakout performances from Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele. The musical was later revived in 2015 by Deaf West Theatre under director Michael Arden.
Throughout his career, Sheik has released nine studio albums as a singer-songwriter. He is also known for his work as an actor. His compositions and performances have made him a significant figure in both popular music and theater.
Sheik was scheduled to begin performances in the Off-Broadway musical "Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen" later this month. The production is set to start previews on November 27, officially open on December 17 at Studio Seaview, and run through February 14, 2027. It remains unclear how his hospitalization will affect this timeline.
A separate "Spring Awakening" revival, directed by Danya Taymor (known for directing "The Outsiders"), is planned for November. Given Sheik's involvement as the composer of the original musical, his recovery timeline could impact this production as well.
Sheik's family shared the news of his hospitalization through Instagram but has not revealed the cause of his medical condition. They have explicitly asked the public and media to respect their privacy during this difficult time. The family statement promised to provide updates when it becomes appropriate to do so.
