Neil Patrick Harris and Julianne Hough will star in a major Broadway revival of Damn Yankees.

The musical “Damn Yankees” will return to Broadway in 2027, beginning previews at the Marquis Theatre on March 24 and opening April 20. Neil Patrick Harris will play Applegate, Julianne Hough will portray Lola, and Austin Scott will play young Joe Boyd. Directed and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, the revival updates the story to 2000, with Joe as a Baltimore Orioles fan hoping to beat the New York Yankees, while retaining the original score. It follows a run at Washington’s Arena Stage and is being produced with Major League Baseball and MLB Studios, marking the first such partnership for a Broadway musical.
The revival has a revised book by Will Power and Doug Wright, with additional lyrics by Lynn Ahrens.
Julianne Hough will make her Broadway debut in the production, playing Joe Boyd’s wife.
The original musical won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical; the revival will be the first Broadway revival in more than 30 years.
The announcement was planned as a stadium event at Yankee Stadium, including Harris throwing out the first pitch, Scott singing the national anthem and Hough delivering a baseball to the mound, but rain forced the game’s cancellation and the actors held a news conference instead.
The musical is based on Douglass Wallop’s 1954 novel, “The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant.”
