New Mazda CX-5 Expands Interior Space While Retaining Its Signature Handling Focus

The third-generation Mazda CX-5 is larger and offers improved rear-seat room and usability while retaining its handling-focused character. Its longer wheelbase and revised steering and suspension improve stability and engagement, though the unchanged 187-horsepower 2.5-liter engine can feel underpowered. In Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup, Michelin’s spec tires have helped lower lap records, but the series prioritizes consistent performance and driver confidence; drivers say the tires stay steady over race runs and grip well on high-load sections of fast circuits.
Mazda R&D senior manager Rubin Archilla said the goal was for the new CX-5 to “keep the same personality” while broadening its appeal.
The previous CX-5 also had narrow door openings and outdated technology, shortcomings alongside its cramped rear seat that limited its mass appeal.
MX-5 Cup switched from BFGoodrich to Michelin tires for the 2024 season; the spec tire is the Michelin Pilot Sport Competition 20/61-17 racing slick.
MX-5 Cup rules require drivers to use their qualifying tires for the first race, while a new set is provided for the second race of the weekend.
