RC Lens Ends Manager Dino Toppmöller's Tenure After Only Six Matches

Lens said Toppmöller waived a “substantial amount” of his severance pay after the club terminated his tenure.
Toppmöller was under contract with Lens until 2028, according to Reuters, meaning his departure came well before the end of his deal.
The dispute reportedly centered on the dismissal of Nelson Morgado, a close confidant who had worked with Toppmöller since 2017, including at Eintracht Frankfurt; Toppmöller viewed the intervention as unacceptable and resisted the change.
Toppmöller’s criticism after the Le Mans draw was particularly forceful: “My team cannot start a match like that. I was still very angry at half-time,” he said, while praising the team’s eventual character and reaction.
Lens were missing six regular starters through injury against Le Mans, forcing Toppmöller to use several young players, including 16-year-old Mezian Mesloub—circumstances that reportedly won some approval despite the result.
