Indian Air Force selects Apollo Micro Systems for indigenous precision bomb kit development

Under the Make-II Prototype Sanction Order, there is no government cost obligation during the IPREK prototype development; procurement commitments are made only upon successful demonstration of the system.

The Indian Air Force has named Apollo Micro Systems (AMS) as its Prime Development Agency to build the Indigenous Precision Range Extension Kit, known as IPREK, according to Business Upturn. The kit would convert standard 500 kg unguided bombs into precision weapons capable of hitting targets up to 100 kilometers away with an accuracy of under 3 meters.
The award comes under the Make-II category of India's defence procurement policy, meaning AMS funds its own prototype development. The government commits to buying units only after successful trials, Business Upturn reported. Over 500 units are expected in the first procurement phase.
IPREK is essentially a guidance upgrade for existing dumb bombs. It straps onto a 500 kg unguided bomb and adds wings, sensors, and a flight computer to dramatically extend its range from a few kilometers to 80–100 kilometers. The system uses NavIC, India's own satellite navigation constellation, as its core guidance tool, according to Business Upturn.
It also includes electro-optical and infrared terminal guidance for the final approach to a target. Crucially, IPREK has a digital scene-matching mode. That means it can still find its target even if GPS and NavIC signals are jammed or blocked. AMS says it owns the guidance software, flight computer, and integration architecture entirely in-house.
India's NavIC constellation was built to reduce dependence on US-controlled GPS. Embedding it inside a precision weapon is a significant step. AMS is positioning itself as one of the first companies globally to base a combat-ready precision munition on NavIC, according to Business Upturn.
The move also supports India's broader push to cut imports of expensive guided weapons. Systems like the Israeli Spice-2000 and the US JDAM-ER perform similar roles but come at a high cost in foreign currency. IPREK aims to deliver comparable performance at a fraction of the import price.
Under the Make-II Prototype Sanction Order, the Indian government pays nothing during development. AMS funds the entire prototype phase itself. Only after the system passes trials does the government step in with a procurement commitment, Business Upturn noted. This puts the financial burden squarely on AMS during the most uncertain phase.
If IPREK passes trials, the upside is substantial. An initial order of over 500 units would represent a major revenue stream. With each kit potentially valued in the tens of millions of rupees, analysts see this as a multi-year revenue opportunity for the company if milestones are met.
Markets gave the news a muted reception. AMS shares slid more than 3% in the session after the announcement, according to The Daily Jagran. That kind of short-term drop is common in India's defence sector, where investors weigh long development timelines against near-term earnings.
The stock reaction does not change the strategic significance of the deal. Being named a Prime Development Agency by the IAF gives AMS credibility and a direct line to future procurement. If IPREK clears trials, the company could move from a niche electronics supplier to a frontline precision munitions maker.
