Embark Studios Prepares ARC Raiders' Biggest Frozen Trail Update for October Release

The teaser has not confirmed the identity of the giant ARC enemy: it only briefly shows what appear to be mechanical legs, though the footage may correspond to Embark’s previously described “enormous” machine that can “halt you in your tracks.”
Embark executive producer Aleksander Grøndal said the studio could eliminate Expeditions altogether: “Maybe we’ll scrap the whole system altogether. That is on the table, too. Right now, the team is trying to figure out what the next steps for Expeditions are.”
The fifth Expedition is expected to be the final one before the system’s planned hiatus, with its eventual return uncertain and potentially ruled out permanently.
The new map is described as a frozen settlement beneath towering mountains on the edge of the Rust Belt, suggesting a distinct geographic setting rather than simply a temporary snowy map condition.
Beyond the skill-tree overhaul, Frozen Trail will also improve Raider Decks, while the new ARC Operation is designed around dynamic encounters and teamwork and is described as one of the game’s most intense experiences to date.
Embark Studios will showcase ARC Raiders' biggest update yet on September 23, giving players their first detailed look at Frozen Trail ahead of its October 8, 2026 release. Massive Op The overhaul introduces a towering frozen map called Pendola Pass, new enemy types, a complete progression redesign, and a challenging operation for hardcore players. It marks the studio's first major test of shifting from monthly updates to just two big releases per year.
The update also pauses Expeditions indefinitely, with executives openly considering scrapping the system entirely. Game Rant Executive producer Aleksander Grøndal said the team is 'trying to figure out what the next steps for Expeditions are,' adding 'Maybe we'll scrap the whole system altogether. That is on the table, too.' The studio struggled to sustain monthly releases with its 120-person team, pushing it toward longer development cycles that emphasize quality over speed.
Frozen Trail's teaser video hints at an enormous ARC enemy, briefly flashing what appear to be mechanical legs towering over the landscape. Game Rant Embark has not confirmed the machine's identity, but the footage likely corresponds to the studio's description of an 'enormous' threat that can 'halt you in your tracks.' The new map, Pendola Pass, sits in a frozen settlement nestled beneath towering mountains on the edge of the Rust Belt, introducing dynamic weather hazards like Flash Freeze events.
Beyond the giant machine, Frozen Trail adds three new smaller ARC threats: Bullies, Hydras, and Skulkers. Game Nguide The update also features a challenging operation designed around intense teamwork and dynamic encounters. Players will face these threats across the new vertical map, which emphasizes climbing and exploring at multiple elevations—a major shift from the studio's previous flat level design.
Frozen Trail completely redesigns skill trees so players no longer unlock everything—they must choose which abilities to develop. Massive Op Grøndal explained: 'We have removed some skills and we have added a bunch of new ones. Instead of unlocking everything, you have to select a few.' The update also transforms the Raiders Den into a customizable Outpost where players decorate their personal space, adding a housing system absent at launch.
A new Research Bench eliminates the randomness of blueprint drops by letting players directly unlock weapons and gear. Game Rant The studio overhauled Raider Decks alongside the skill trees, and 15 weapons receive new 'Weapon Amplification' upgrade paths. These changes address core complaints about progression feeling grindy and opaque, making advancement feel more rewarding and transparent.
Embark abandoned monthly updates in favor of major releases every six months after the relentless pace exhausted its team. Game Rant Grøndal stated: 'If you take a look at where we were when we did the monthly updates and where we are today, we feel a lot better about what we're putting out and what quality we're putting into the updates.' The switch signals the studio's confidence that fewer, bigger patches will sustain engagement better than constant small drops.
The industry views Frozen Trail as a 'soft relaunch' or '2.0 moment'—a test of whether the extraction shooter can retain players during longer waits between content. Game Watcher Some community members worry about the six-month gaps, though others welcome the removal of RNG blueprints via the Research Bench. The fate of Expeditions remains unclear, with the fifth Expedition likely being the last before an indefinite hiatus beginning early 2027.
