Sherburne County Candidates Outline Their Top Priorities in Upcoming Election Questionnaires

Sherburne County candidates outlined differing priorities in questionnaire responses. County attorney candidates Hans Larson, a prosecutor with 15 years’ experience, and appointed incumbent Dawn Nyhus, who cites more than 20 years in public service, both emphasize public safety; Larson also highlights combating fraud and improving victim services, while Nyhus stresses the county’s civil legal work and fiscal responsibility. Auditor candidate Brenda Davis points to 12 years in the Auditor-Treasurer’s Office and prioritizes secure, nonpartisan elections, accurate financial records and transparency. County commissioner candidate Gregg Felber highlights preparing for the Sherco power plant’s planned closure and maximizing benefits from a proposed landfill expansion. Fellow commissioner candidate Mark Swanson calls for better coordination with local governments, a review of road plans and efforts to control costs by improving efficiency and reducing duplicated services.
Hans Larson currently prosecutes felony domestic- and sexual-assault cases in Wright County and has worked in three county attorney’s offices, including Sherburne County.
Dawn Nyhus said her experience includes prosecuting murder, criminal vehicular homicide, criminal sexual conduct, financial exploitation and welfare fraud, as well as civil work involving commitments, land use, child support and contract review.
Brenda Davis said she has worked through six election cycles, including equipment testing, recounts and election-night verification, and brought some audit work in-house to save taxpayer money.
Gregg Felber said he has lobbied to change the legislation behind Sherco’s planned 2030 closure and, as chair of the Minnesota Energy Transition Advisory Board, works with energy-industry and economic-development representatives on solutions.
Mark Swanson cited simultaneous construction on two county roads as an example of disruptions that earlier coordination with local governments could help prevent; he also called for reviewing county road right-of-way expansion plans, including the use of rumble strips.
