Ukraine Deploys Swedish ASC 890 Airborne Warning Aircraft for Combat Missions

Sweden announced the two-aircraft transfer as part of a military aid package worth €1.16 billion, described at the time as the country’s largest aid package to Ukraine. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson formally handed over the aircraft to Ukraine’s ambassador in a ceremony on May 30, 2024.
The Erieye radar can reportedly track up to 500 surface targets and 1,000 air targets simultaneously, cover altitudes up to 20 kilometers and detect targets at an instrumental range of up to 450 kilometers, with a fighter-detection range of about 350 kilometers.
Ukraine has modified its F-16s to interact with the Swedish airborne-warning aircraft, allowing data collected by the ASC 890 to be integrated directly into fighter operations.
The aircraft can pass tracking data to Ukrainian fighter pilots so they can intercept threats without activating their own radars, reducing the risk of exposing their positions. The ASC 890 is operated by a six-person crew that includes mission-control, combat-control and surveillance specialists.
Independent reporting had indicated that the aircraft may have been operating in Ukrainian airspace before the official confirmation: footage posted on a Russian Telegram channel on March 20, 2026, appeared to show the aircraft in flight, although the date and location could not be independently verified.

Despite the radar advantage, Ukraine still lacks the missiles needed to match Russian fighters at long range.
