Samsung SDS Plans 2027 Robot Platform and 1,000-Line Trials for Manufacturing

Samsung SDS will participate as the first South Korean pilot partner in OpenAI’s Daybreak Partner Program, a cybersecurity initiative that embeds frontier AI models into software-security workflows from the earliest stages of development.
CEO Lee Joon-hee said Samsung SDS’s AX strategy goes beyond efficiency gains: “AX is not simply about reducing time and costs. It means completely redesigning the way businesses and work are done from the ground up.”
Samsung SDS said its RX initiative builds on more than 25 years of experience developing manufacturing execution systems, equipment automation and logistics automation for clients in semiconductors, secondary batteries and biotechnology.
The company is focusing initially on applying robots to existing production lines rather than manufacturing the robots itself; Samsung SDS said many of its manufacturing affiliates still rely heavily on manual labor despite high automation levels at some sites.
Walden Robotics CEO Russ Tedrake said large-scale field deployment capabilities and manufacturing expertise are necessary to turn physical AI into measurable results on production floors, adding that he was pleased to partner with Samsung SDS, which he described as having “the best capabilities in the field.”
Samsung SDS is betting big on robots to transform manufacturing. The South Korean IT company plans to launch a robot orchestration platform in 2027 that will coordinate mixed robot fleets across more than 1,000 production lines at Samsung affiliates Global Sources, then expand to over 430 external clients globally. The move marks Samsung SDS's push beyond digital AI into physical factory automation.
The initiative comes as Samsung SDS deepens AI partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic, aiming to embed cutting-edge AI models into its services Korea Herald. CEO Lee Joon-hee said the company's strategy is not just about cutting costs or time. "AX is not simply about reducing time and costs. It means completely redesigning the way businesses and work are done from the ground up," he said Global Sources.
Samsung SDS will test its robot platform across more than 1,000 production lines at Samsung manufacturing sites before rolling out to external clients Global Sources. The orchestration platform will coordinate different types of robots, optimize their movements, detect equipment failures, and reroute operations to prevent factory-wide shutdowns. The company focuses on deploying robots to existing lines rather than building robots itself Global Sources.
Many Samsung affiliate factories still rely heavily on manual labor despite automation at some sites Global Sources. This gap creates the opportunity for robot deployment. Samsung SDS announced expanded partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic to accelerate AI transformation across the Samsung Group Korea Herald. The company is applying AI across seven internal business processes using a "client zero" approach—testing solutions internally before selling them to customers Crypto Briefing.
Samsung SDS will also serve as the first South Korean pilot partner in OpenAI's Daybreak Partner Program, which embeds advanced AI models into software security workflows from development's earliest stages Global Sources. The move positions Samsung SDS as a gateway for enterprise AI adoption within Samsung and across South Korea Crypto Briefing.
Samsung SDS partnered with Team REX, a 10-company coalition focused on physical AI, to accelerate robot deployment Global Sources. Members include Rainbow Robotics and Walden Robotics. Samsung SDS and Walden Robotics plan to jointly develop manufacturing applications Global Sources.
Walden Robotics CEO Russ Tedrake praised the partnership, saying large-scale field deployment capabilities and manufacturing expertise are essential to convert physical AI into real production floor results Global Sources. He called Samsung SDS "the best capabilities in the field" for this mission Global Sources.
