Kayaker Hospitalized After Shark Attack While Fishing Off Malibu Coast

A kayaker was hospitalized Sunday after a shark he had hooked while fishing near Paradise Cove in Malibu bit him twice, including after he fell into the water while trying to release it. Nearby boaters helped bring him to safety, and Los Angeles County responders transported him to a hospital; his condition has not been reported. Lifeguards believe the shark may have been a shortfin mako, but officials have not confirmed its species. Authorities said the beach was not closed, noting makos generally remain in deeper water.
Lifeguard Alex Buford said the shark bit the kayaker, was released, then returned and knocked him from the kayak before biting his leg again.
Reports identified the kayaker’s injury as a shark bite to his leg or lower body; his condition and the severity of the injury were not known.
The New York Post reported that after being pulled from the water by a nearby fisherman, the kayaker called his girlfriend, a retired lifeguard, who contacted 911.
