Tom Morello is releasing his first solo rock album in over three decades. The record, Everyone Gets Everything They Want, drops September 25 on Mom + Pop Music, according to Billboard. It features guest appearances from Serj Tankian, the Irish rap group Kneecap, metalcore band Beartooth, and Morello's teenage son Roman.
The announcement comes alongside the album's second single, 'Date Night' — a politically charged track built around an anti-fascist message. Morello says he makes 'anti-racist songs for anti-racists, anti-fascist songs for anti-fascists, and anti-Nazi songs for anti-Nazis.' He adds: 'Which side are you on?'
'Date Night' Draws on WWII Dutch Resistance Heroines
The song tells the true story of three young Dutch women: Truus Oversteegen, Freddie Oversteegen, and Hannie Schaft. During World War II, the trio used seduction to lure Nazi officers and then assassinate them. They also smuggled weapons, sabotaged railways, and helped Jewish children escape capture, according to Billboard.
Morello frames 'Date Night' as a direct political statement about fascism and Nazi oppression. The song's killer riff was co-written by his son Roman, who also contributed to four other tracks on the album, Far Out Magazine reports.
Roman Morello and Star Guests Shape the Album's Sound
Roman Morello co-wrote five songs total on Everyone Gets Everything They Want. His father called it a major behind-the-scenes contribution. The album's first single, 'Adjourn It,' already featured both Roman and System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian, Metal Injection notes.
Five producers worked on the record: Tyler Smyth, Carl Restivo, Zakk Cervini, Dan Carey, and Sam Nelson Harris. Morello has teased more collaborations still to be revealed. Rock Cellar Magazine describes the LP as a full return to the rock frontman role he has not held since his early career.
First Solo Rock Album Since a 1989 Band Debut
Everyone Gets Everything They Want is Morello's first solo rock album since Something Bitchin' This Way Comes, released in 1989 with his band Lock Up, according to Metal Injection. In the years since, he became famous as the guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and later Audioslave.
Earlier singles 'Adjourn It' and 'Everything Burns' set the album's anti-fascist tone. The album is also available in a limited edition red and black stripe vinyl pressing, capped at 300 copies, Revolver reports.
Power to the People Festival Anchors the Fall Tour
Morello will support the album with live dates this fall, including the Louder Than Life festival. The biggest show is the Power to the People festival on October 3 in Columbia, Maryland. The lineup includes Dave Matthews, Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, Public Enemy, Killer Mike, Dropkick Murphys, and Jack Black, among others.
Serj Tankian and Grandson are also on the Power to the People bill, extending the album's collaborative circle to the stage. Morello has hinted at more live appearances running through fall and into next year, Rock Cellar Magazine says.
