Bill Pulte Transfers Interim Intelligence Director Role to Jay Clayton After Senate Confirmation
Anonymous
Bill Pulte, who doubles as Trump's housing regulator, will hand over his role as acting director of national intelligence to Jay Clayton on Monday, according to AP News. Pulte's two-month stint leading the nation's top spy agency will officially come to an end with the transition.
Clayton was confirmed by the Senate along party lines this week. He previously served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Some Republican lawmakers criticized his pick, saying he lacks the national security experience needed for the job, AP News reported.
How a Housing Regulator Ended Up Running U.S. Intelligence
Pulte's path to the intelligence post was unusual. He was already serving as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency — the regulator overseeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — when Trump tapped him to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on an acting basis, WWLTV reported. There was no Senate confirmation required for the temporary role.
His tenure lasted roughly two months. During that time, Pulte took a high-profile step: releasing intelligence community documents. Those documents described China's ability to interfere in the American political process and laid out vulnerabilities in the U.S. election system, according to AP News.
Senate Confirms Clayton Despite Republican Pushback on Credentials
The Senate confirmed Clayton along strict party lines on Tuesday. Critics within the Republican Party questioned whether a former Wall Street regulator and federal prosecutor was the right fit for one of the most sensitive national security jobs in government, Click On Detroit reported.
Clayton's backers pointed to his law enforcement background. As U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, he oversaw major federal prosecutions. He also led the SEC under Trump's first term. Supporters argue those roles show he can manage a large, complex agency under political pressure.
Clayton Takes the Reins Monday, Swearing-In Date Still Unknown
Pulte confirmed the Monday handover himself. The White House has not yet said when Clayton will be formally sworn in, AP News reported. Until that ceremony happens, the exact moment of the official transfer remains unclear.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence oversees all 18 U.S. intelligence agencies. It was created after the September 11 attacks to improve coordination across the spy community. Whoever leads it has access to the country's most sensitive secrets and sets priorities for agencies like the CIA and NSA, KTAR noted.
Pulte's Brief Tenure Leaves a Complicated Paper Trail
Despite spending only two months in the role, Pulte made his mark by releasing classified intelligence documents to the public. The files focused on China's election interference capabilities and weaknesses in U.S. voting infrastructure, according to MyNorthwest. The move was seen as politically charged by critics.
It remains to be seen whether Clayton will continue that approach or shift course. His background is in finance and law, not intelligence or foreign policy. How he handles the job — and whether he can win over skeptics in Congress — will be closely watched from day one, Newsday reported.
