Steelers Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Ruled Out Amid Ongoing Trade Rumors

Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was ruled out of Thursday night’s game against the Browns, extending his absence to four games after his back issue reappeared on the injury report. Although he was listed as a full participant for conditioning during two walkthroughs, he will not make his season debut. His absence comes amid a contract dispute and trade speculation: Detroit and Dallas have contacted Pittsburgh, while reports of Detroit progressing toward a deal and Pittsburgh seeking a second-round pick remain unconfirmed. The Steelers will also be without running back Rico Dowdle, while defensive backs Jalen Ramsey and Brandin Echols are questionable.
An ESPN report described a valuation gap in trade talks: league evaluators reportedly view Porter as a high-quality but not elite shutdown corner, while Porter is seeking an extension worth more than $30 million annually.
Dallas was reportedly reluctant to surrender valuable draft capital as well as commit to a large contract; the report noted the Cowboys had only six picks in the 2027 draft.
Porter’s back issue had not appeared on the injury report since Week 2 before returning as a designation ahead of the Browns game.
Rico Dowdle was set to miss his second straight game with a toe injury, leaving Jaylen Warren to handle the vast majority of the Steelers’ carries again.
Steelers radio host Chris Mueller interpreted Porter’s latest absence as a possible precursor to a trade, saying, “I think this is a prelude to a trade.”
