Historically Quiet Atlantic Hurricane Season Approaches Satellite-Era Record For Latest First Hurricane

If no Atlantic hurricane forms before the weekend, the 2026 season will set a satellite-era record for the latest first hurricane, surpassing the previous Sept. 11 record set in both 2002 and 2013.

The Eastern Pacific’s activity is elevated not only relative to the Atlantic but also relative to its own historical norms: it averages about 15 named storms, eight hurricanes and four major hurricanes, while El Niño years since 1990 have averaged approximately 17 named storms, nine hurricanes and five major hurricanes.
The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season is running at a historic standstill as it reaches its climatological peak in mid-September. With only five named storms and zero hurricanes so far, the season is on track to set a satellite-era record for the latest first hurricane if none forms by the weekend, according to 13 News Now.
