Veteran striker Olivier Giroud reveals current season with Lille will likely be his last

Olivier Giroud says the current season with Lille will very probably be his last as a professional footballer, and that he is savoring each moment. The 39-year-old is nearing the end of a career spanning more than two decades, with honors including the 2018 World Cup with France, league titles with Montpellier and AC Milan, and the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea. He scored 57 goals in 137 appearances for France and became the national team’s record scorer before Kylian Mbappé surpassed him. At Milan, Giroud scored 49 goals in 132 appearances and played a key role in the club’s 2021-22 Serie A title win.
Giroud began his professional career in 2006 with Grenoble, then playing in France’s second division, and made his final appearance for France in 2024.
Alongside his Champions League win with Chelsea, Giroud won the FA Cup four times—three times with Arsenal.
Giroud scored twice in three minutes to turn Milan’s February 2022 derby against Inter from 0-1 to 2-1, then scored twice again in the match that secured Milan’s league title against Sassuolo.
After returning to Ligue 1 from Los Angeles FC in summer 2025, Giroud scored 11 goals for Lille last season and extended his contract by a year in June; this season, he had one goal and two assists in six matches at the time of reporting.
