Texas Authorities Arrest Man Following Credible Threat Against State Capitol

Texas authorities arrested 40-year-old Benny Caldera Jr. early Wednesday at his home in Converse after receiving what the Department of Public Safety called credible information about a violent attack planned against the State Capitol for Thursday, Oct. 1. DPS worked with the FBI and local law enforcement before the arrest. Caldera was charged with felony terroristic threat against a public servant and held on a $75,000 bond at Bexar County Jail. Authorities have not disclosed details of the alleged plan, a motive, any intended target or whether others were involved; the investigation remains active. The Capitol remains open with increased security, state lawmakers were notified, and no injuries have been reported.
Bexar County court records show Caldera was previously charged with unlicensed carrying of a weapon in November 2023.
The charge against Caldera is classified as a third-degree felony.
Gov. Greg Abbott said, “Texas will NOT tolerate threats of violence against our Capitol.”
DPS said the public can report suspicious behavior through the iWatchTexas app or website, or by calling 844-643-2251.
