Developer Infrastructure Startup Temporal Raises $550 Million at $12.55 Billion Valuation

Temporal said net dollar retention has remained above 200% since February 2026, indicating that existing customers are substantially expanding their use of the platform.
The company reported 43,141,638 open-source installs, a 368% year-over-year increase in August actions, and roughly 450,000 developers building on its open-source project.
Temporal said its workforce doubled over the past year to 570 employees, with staff distributed across four continents.
Beyond the customers named in the summary, Temporal cited Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, as well as Lovable, Scale AI, Salesforce, Shopify, Booking.com, Block and DoorDash among organizations using its technology. Applications include autonomous-vehicle simulations, payment systems and customer operations.
CEO Samar Abbas said the funding reflects the growing importance of reliability in AI software: “Reliability has never been optional, but AI has quickly raised the cost of skipping it,” adding that developers need that foundation “built in from day one, not bolted on afterward.”
Temporal, a Seattle-based infrastructure company, raised $550 million in Series E funding at a $12.55 billion valuation, more than doubling its worth since February Yahoo Finance. The round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, Wellington Management, Goldman Sachs Alternatives, and Tiger Global. Temporal's open-source platform helps applications and AI agents stay reliable when things go wrong—a capability that's become critical as companies deploy AI at scale.
The company now serves more than 4,300 paying customers including OpenAI, Snap, NVIDIA, Netflix and JPMorgan Chase SiliconAngle. Temporal's annualized revenue run rate has surpassed $250 million, up more than 200% year over year. CEO Samar Abbas said the timing reflects a shift in how companies build AI: "Reliability has never been optional, but AI has quickly raised the cost of skipping it."
Temporal's core product is a durable-execution platform that acts as a safety net for software. When an application crashes or fails, Temporal preserves the application's state and helps it recover without losing work GeekWire. This matters most with AI agents—programs that make decisions and take actions autonomously. If an agent fails mid-task, Temporal's technology ensures it can pick up where it left off.
The company reported its platform processed more than 1.9 trillion actions in August. Temporal also cited major users beyond its headline customers: Cursor (through Anysphere), Lovable, Scale AI, Salesforce, Shopify, Booking.com, Block and DoorDash The AI Insider. These applications range from autonomous-vehicle simulations to payment systems and customer operations.
Temporal's growth metrics show explosive expansion. The company reported 43 million open-source installs, with an 368% year-over-year increase in platform actions by August Yahoo Finance. Around 450,000 developers are now building on its open-source project. Existing customers are expanding their use sharply—Temporal said net dollar retention has remained above 200% since February 2026, meaning each customer cohort is spending significantly more over time.
Temporal doubled its workforce over the past year to 570 employees spread across four continents SiliconAngle. The company plans to use its new funding to expand globally, boost platform reliability and security, scale infrastructure, and grow both developer and enterprise teams.
Temporal's 2.5x valuation jump in under a year reflects a fundamental shift in how investors view infrastructure. As AI agents handle more critical tasks—from payment processing to autonomous decisions—the cost of failure skyrockets. A crashed AI agent could lose millions in transactions or make unsafe decisions. Temporal positions itself as foundational: the layer that makes AI reliable from the ground up.
Abbas framed it plainly: developers need reliability "built in from day one, not bolted on afterward." With major tech firms and AI labs already customers, and over 200% annual growth in customer spending, Temporal has moved from niche infrastructure play to essential plumbing for the AI era.
