White Sox Sweep Astros to Reach Division Series for First Time Since 2005

The Chicago White Sox swept the Houston Astros in their best-of-three American League Wild Card Series, winning Game 2, 7-3, to advance to face the Cleveland Guardians in the Division Series. Chicago scored four first-inning runs as Astros starter Hunter Brown exited after two outs, and Chase Meidroth’s three-run homer in the sixth restored the lead after solo home runs by Jeremy Peña, Cam Smith and Jose Altuve brought Houston within one. The series win was Chicago’s first since its 2005 World Series title, following three consecutive 100-loss seasons; the White Sox became the first major league team to reach the playoffs after consecutive 100-loss campaigns. Houston, which finished 81-81, became the first team to reach the postseason without a winning record and extended its home playoff losing streak to nine games. Chicago was scheduled to open the best-of-five Division Series in Cleveland on Saturday.
Chicago’s four-run first inning was aided by two Astros errors. Sam Antonacci doubled when left fielder Yordan Alvarez could not make the play, and a wayward throw home by Lucas Spence allowed another run to score.
Before his early exit, Hunter Brown had been 6-0 with a 2.39 ERA in six career starts against Chicago.
Houston’s bullpen retired 13 consecutive batters after Brown left, but Chicago rallied in the sixth after Peter Lambert walked Andrew Benintendi and Tristan Peters, setting up Meidroth’s homer.
Chicago won the regular-season series against Cleveland 7-6, but the Guardians earned home-field advantage in the Division Series by winning the division by one game.
