Padres Defeat Yankees Following First-Inning Home Run Barrage Off Gerrit Cole

The San Diego Padres defeated the New York Yankees 4-3, taking two of three games in their series. Fernando Tatis Jr., Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado each hit consecutive home runs off Gerrit Cole in the bottom of the first inning. The Yankees managed to score three runs off reliever Adrian Morejon in the eighth, including an RBI double from rookie Spencer Jones. San Diego starter Michael King pitched six shutout innings against his former team, and the Padres remained a half-game behind Arizona for the third National League wild card. The win lifts the Yankees to their 34th consecutive winning season.
