Istanbul School Knife Attack Leaves Eight Students Injured, One in Critical Condition

The incident took place at Şeyh Şamil İmam Hatip Middle School in the Kayaşehir area, at around 8:35–8:40 a.m. on October 6.
Başakşehir District Governor Cemil Özgür Öneği said seven of the eight injured students were girls.
Local reports said the suspect entered her former school wearing a school uniform; another report said she lived in the same neighborhood near the school.
One report said authorities opened both judicial and administrative investigations to establish how the attack occurred. Another noted that school violence had drawn increased attention in Turkey after a series of attacks this year.
A knife attack at a middle school in Istanbul's Başakşehir district injured eight students on October 6, with one in critical condition. Daily Sabah reported that a 15-year-old girl, described as a former student, entered Şeyh Şamil İmam Hatip Middle School around 8:35 a.m. and attacked students with a knife. Police detained the suspect immediately.
Health Minister Kemal MemiÅŸoÄŸlu confirmed one student was in critical condition and two others in moderately serious condition. Albeu reported that seven of the eight injured students were girls. All students were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, and authorities launched both judicial and administrative investigations.
Officials first reported five students injured in what they described as a fight between students. Yahoo cited the governor's office with this initial count. Within hours, the official number jumped to eight injured as more details emerged and additional victims were identified and treated.
The 15-year-old suspect wore a school uniform when she entered the building, Albeu reported. Local reports suggest she either attended the school previously or lived in the nearby KayaÅŸehir neighborhood. She attacked multiple students with a knife during the early morning hours before police arrived and took her into custody.
This attack adds to a rising wave of school violence incidents across Turkey this year. TodayPress noted that the incident has drawn renewed attention to safety issues in schools. Authorities are investigating how the suspect gained entry to the school and whether security measures were adequate.
