Gaza death toll surpasses 74,000 as ceasefire and withdrawal talks stall.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says 74,016 Palestinians have been killed and 175,068 wounded in the war with Israel, which began after the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The ministry reports that 1,145 Palestinians have died since a ceasefire took effect on October 10, though Israeli strikes have continued; Israel says its attacks respond to threats or attacks. Key elements of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire remain stalled, including Hamas’s disarmament, an Israeli withdrawal, formation of a new Palestinian government and reconstruction. The ministry does not distinguish civilians from militants, and says women and children account for about half of those killed; its records are generally considered reliable by U.N. agencies and international organizations.
The Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack killed about 1,200 people in Israel, most of them civilians, and 251 people were taken hostage.
Seven Israeli soldiers have also been killed since the ceasefire took effect.
Israeli forces control more than half of Gaza, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said they will not withdraw until Hamas disarms.
