Former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling joins Porto on a free transfer.

Porto had won their first seven league matches under Francesco Farioli and held a five-point lead over Benfica, although they had opened their Champions League campaign with a home defeat to Manchester City.
Smalling earned 31 caps for England and represented the country at the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016.
Smalling said his path into professional football was unexpected: “It wasn’t even plan D. I had everything set out. I already had my A levels, and I was looking at other non-league clubs near Leicester because I still wanted to play.”
Smalling made more than 300 appearances for Manchester United and played under Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Former Manchester United and England defender Chris Smalling has joined Porto on a free transfer after departing Saudi Arabian side Al-Fayha. Flashscore reported the 36-year-old centre-back signed a deal through the end of the 2026/27 season, with an option to extend. Smalling adds defensive depth to Francesco Farioli's squad as Porto pursue domestic and European success.
The move comes as Porto have won their first seven league matches under Farioli and hold a five-point lead over Benfica in the Portuguese title race, though they opened their Champions League campaign with a home defeat to Manchester City. Yahoo Sports confirmed the signing was announced officially by the club.
Smalling spent over a decade at Manchester United, making more than 300 appearances and winning two Premier League titles. He played under four different managers including Sir Alex Ferguson, and represented England 31 times, including at the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016. Nogomania noted his experience makes him a valuable addition to Porto's backline.
After leaving Manchester United, Smalling found success abroad. He won the Europa Conference League with Roma in 2022, cementing his status as a proven winner at the highest levels of European football.
Smalling's journey into the game was unconventional. He said his route was so unlikely that "it wasn't even plan D." The defender had already completed his A-levels and was considering non-league clubs near Leicester because he wanted to keep playing football while pursuing other options.
Despite that uncertain start, Smalling established himself as a reliable and consistent defender at the highest level, ultimately playing for some of Europe's biggest clubs and earning international recognition.
Porto's decision to sign Smalling on a free transfer provides crucial depth at centre-back as the club deals with defensive injuries. The Portuguese giants are competing on multiple fronts — both in the domestic league and Champions League — making experienced cover essential.
At 36, Smalling brings proven leadership and tournament experience. His ability to step in immediately while others recover makes him a low-risk, high-reward signing for Farioli as Porto aim to challenge for the title and make a deeper Champions League run.
