Nioh 3's First Major DLC, Hell Rising, Launches August 19 with New Challenge and Edo Setting

Enlightened One's Journey is gated behind completing Shogun's Journey, introducing a true endgame difficulty with curses that boost enemy power but also increase potential rewards (new risk/reward loop for late-game players).
The expansion adds a broader arsenal, including Hoko & Shield in both Samurai and Ninja styles, plus a dedicated Ninja Hoko & Shield variant; a throwable rotating blade is listed among new weapons, and spear & shield is also introduced, expanding combat options across playstyles.
The new Edo setting is fleshed out as Edo 1651 during the Keian Era, depicted as a crucible-overrun capital with a hellish wasteland where yokai, human rebels, and foreign alchemists collide, amplifying the series’ chaotic atmosphere.
Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls offer advanced customization: players tune Scroll configurations to shape battles and rewards, with Scrolls obtainable as gear; further depth comes from broader systems like stronger equipment, more Soul Cores, higher level caps, and enhanced Soul Matching.
Koei Tecmo and Team NINJA have set August 19, 2026 as the release date for Hell Rising, the first paid DLC for Nioh 3, according to GamesPress. The expansion lands on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and kicks off a two-part story arc included with the game's season pass.
Hell Rising sends protagonist Takechiyo to Edo in 1651, during Japan's Keian Era. The city has been overrun by a mysterious force called the crucible, turning it into a hellish wasteland. New allies, new weapons, and a punishing new difficulty mode all come with the package, GamingBolt reported.
The DLC drops players into a crucible-overrun Edo, depicted as a ruined capital where yokai, human rebels, and foreign alchemists clash, according to PlayDay. Takechiyo fights alongside two allies: swordsman Yagyu Jubei and a foreign figure named Rodrigo. A plot involving Spirit Stones ties the new story back to Nioh 3's larger narrative.
The setting expands Nioh 3's open-area design with new environments, enemies, and yokai to discover, iXBT Games noted. Koei Tecmo described the city as a place where chaos has completely taken hold, amplifying the series' signature blend of history and supernatural horror.
Hell Rising introduces the Hoko and Shield weapon set in both Samurai and Ninja styles, plus a dedicated Ninja Hoko and Shield variant, according to GamesPress. A throwable rotating blade and a spear-and-shield combo are also listed among the new arsenal. Each style comes with its own Martial Arts, giving players fresh move sets to master.
The expansion also raises the level cap and adds more Soul Cores — items that let players channel yokai powers. Enhanced Soul Matching, which upgrades gear stats, gives veterans more ways to fine-tune their builds, GamingBolt reported.
A new difficulty called Enlightened One's Journey is locked behind completing the base game's Shogun's Journey mode, according to Games.gg. It adds curses to enemies, making them significantly stronger. But tougher enemies also drop better rewards, creating a risk-and-reward loop aimed squarely at endgame players.
Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls add another layer of depth. Players configure these Scrolls to shape the battles they face and the rewards they earn. The Scrolls themselves can drop as gear, giving collectors a new set of items to chase, GamingBolt noted.
Hell Rising is just the first of two expansions in Nioh 3's season pass. The second, called Bloody Insurrection, will release after August 19 and continue the overarching story, according to GamesPress. Koei Tecmo has not yet announced a release date for that second chapter.
Together, the two DLCs extend Nioh 3's mix of Ninja Gaiden-style action and Dark Souls-inspired difficulty into new territory. With new bosses, stronger equipment, and expanded customization, the season pass looks built for players who want hundreds of additional hours, iXBT Games reported.
