Key Points
1
The field is expanding beyond Mendoza and Quigley to include notable contenders such as former Ald. George Cardenas and CHA board member Matt Brewer, signaling a crowded race.
2
Giannoulias has a outsized fundraising advantage—about $22 million in his campaign account, reportedly more than triple the combined total of all other candidates.
3
A University of Chicago poll found 52% of respondents were excited about Giannoulias' candidacy, the highest level of enthusiasm among contenders and the only candidate with a majority.

Giannoulias launched his campaign from the IBEW Local 134 union hall in Bronzeville, signaling a labor-forward strategy and intent to mobilize strong union backing.
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias formally entered the 2027 Chicago mayoral race on Tuesday, launching his campaign from an IBEW Local 134 union hall in Bronzeville. The move makes him an immediate frontrunner in a crowded field that already includes Comptroller Susana Mendoza and former Congressman Mike Quigley, according to WTTW.
Giannoulias brings a massive financial edge to the race. His campaign account holds roughly $22 million — reportedly more than triple the combined total of all other candidates, Axios reported. A University of Chicago poll found 52% of respondents were excited about his candidacy, the highest share of any contender and the only one to clear a majority.
A Bronzeville Launch Designed to Signal Labor Strength
Giannoulias made his announcement at the headquarters of IBEW Local 134, one of Chicago's largest electrical workers unions. The choice of venue was deliberate. It sent a clear message about his strategy: build a coalition rooted in trade unions and working-class neighborhoods, WTTW reported.
His platform includes universal pre-K, higher wages, more affordable housing, and a fairer tax system. He is also stressing basic competence in city government. He said voters deserve leadership that can "actually get things done" — a clear contrast with the current administration of Mayor Brandon Johnson, according to Block Club Chicago.
Giannoulias Holds $22 Million War Chest and Top Poll Numbers
The fundraising gap between Giannoulias and his rivals is striking. His $22 million stockpile dwarfs the competition. No other candidate in the race comes close to matching it, Axios reported. That money advantage gives him the ability to run TV ads, hire staff, and build a citywide operation far earlier than anyone else.
The polling numbers back up the enthusiasm. At 52%, Giannoulias is the only candidate to earn majority excitement in the University of Chicago survey. That puts him well ahead of Mendoza, Quigley, and others who have entered or are weighing a run, according to Yahoo News.
A Crowded Field With Mayor Johnson Still on the Sidelines
The race is filling up fast. Beyond Mendoza and Quigley, former Alderman George Cardenas and CHA board member Matt Brewer have also entered. Mayor Brandon Johnson has not yet said whether he will seek reelection, leaving a key question unanswered for all candidates, Axios reported.
The election is set for February 23, 2027. If no candidate wins a majority, a runoff follows on April 6. With so many candidates splitting votes, a runoff looks likely, according to Block Club Chicago.
Giannoulias Still on the Ballot for Two Jobs at Once
One unusual wrinkle: Giannoulias is also running for reelection as Secretary of State. That means Illinois voters could see his name on the ballot for two different offices at the same time. He has not said which job he would keep if he wins both, Head Topics reported.
His backers argue his record of modernizing the Secretary of State's office proves he can run a large government operation. Critics may question whether he is fully committed to either job. That tension is likely to become a central issue as the race heats up through 2026.
