Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios reveals Monstropolis land's laughter-powered city and immersive rides

Disney is lifting more information about Monstropolis, the upcoming Monsters, Inc. land at Walt Disney World’s Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which is taking shape in part where Muppets Courtyard used to be. The official backstory frames Monstropolis as a city now powered by human laughter, after the characters learn laughter beats fear, and it introduces the concept of the first “H.U.M.A.N. Day” (Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice), driven by a Department of Human Relations. Guests are invited to explore the monster city and interact with its residents through attractions and venues including Harryhausen’s restaurant and the new Glob Theater in the former MuppetVision 3D space. The centerpiece Monsters, Inc. Doors Coaster is being built backstage and is described as Disney’s first suspended, vertical-life roller coaster, transporting riders through the door vault. On-the-ground reporting indicates the land will largely reuse elements of the existing layout while reimagining facades and converting venues, with Harryhausen’s expected to replace Mama Melrose as a table-service spot. Disney has not yet announced an opening date for Monstropolis.
Disney also unveiled the land’s branding/logo: “Monstropolis: The City Frightful,” explicitly modeled as a play on Orlando’s official “The City Beautiful” motto.
The official narrative describes a “historic decision” discussed through the Monstropolis Horn, and explains the pre-laughter era: monsters didn’t just use fear to power the city—they were also “scared of humans,” viewing them as “dangerous, toxic, and completely off-limits.”
In a hard-hat visit, USA TODAY reported that “concrete and metal bones” are being used to build the new cityscape, and quoted Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro saying the project will use “all the latest technology… the most immersive environment you can imagine.”
Construction reporting details that the Stage 1 Company Store has been demolished, alongside changes to facades and restaurants in the former Muppets Courtyard area.
Disney’s revealed vision for Monstropolis includes practical Audio-Animatronic characters combined with “advanced digital effects” across the experiences—an added layer beyond the land’s basic attraction list.
