Texas Rangers Place Leading Hitter Josh Jung on Injured List with Calf Strain

The Texas Rangers placed third baseman Josh Jung on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left calf strain, retroactive to Wednesday, according to Leader-Telegram. Jung is the team's best hitter this season and is tied for third in the American League with a .294 batting average.
To fill his roster spot, the Rangers recalled infielder Josh Smith from Triple-A, Lufkin Daily News reported. This marks the third time this season Jung has been sidelined by a health issue.
Jung left a game against the Chicago White Sox after Rangers manager Skip Schumaker noticed something was wrong. Schumaker pulled Jung from the lineup after watching him run at only about half speed, according to The News-Enterprise. That was a clear sign the injury needed attention right away.
The Rangers made the IL placement official on Saturday, but dated it back to Wednesday to give Jung more recovery time. The 10-day injured list means he must miss at least 10 days before he can return to action.
This is not the first time Jung has had to step away from the field in 2025. He has now been sidelined three separate times this season due to health problems, according to Leader-Telegram. That pattern of injuries is a growing concern for the Rangers.
Despite missing time, Jung still leads all Texas hitters with a .294 average. He is also tied for third among all American League batters at that mark. Losing him, even briefly, is a real blow to the Rangers' offense.
To replace Jung on the active roster, the Rangers called up infielder Josh Smith from Triple-A, BDT Online reported. Smith is a versatile infielder who can play multiple positions, giving manager Schumaker options at third base while Jung heals.
Smith's recall gives the Rangers a like-for-like option at the infield corners. The team will hope Jung's calf strain heals quickly so the All-Star-caliber hitter can return close to the minimum 10-day window, according to Oskaloosa.
