Nor’easter Floods New Jersey Coastal Communities and Brings Shark to Driveway

A weakening nor’easter brought severe coastal flooding, strong winds and widespread power outages across New Jersey and the Northeast. In Surf City, New Jersey, video showed a small shark swimming through floodwater and up a driveway; a marine biologist identified it as a smooth dogfish, a common and generally harmless species. In New York City, a falling tree killed a housing worker. Officials warned that floodwaters remained dangerous because of hidden debris, downed power lines and changing tides, even as the storm moved away and conditions began improving. In the Lehigh Valley, lingering showers were expected to end Monday, followed by several dry, increasingly warm days.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency in eight counties as officials assessed storm damage, water rescues and road closures.
Surf City recorded wind gusts of up to 74 mph, while floodwater reached as high as four feet in the town.
JCP&L said more than 3,200 personnel were supporting power-restoration work in New Jersey, including nearly 1,600 line workers.
The Lehigh Valley recorded about an inch of rain through Sunday night, while parts of the Jersey Shore received more than four inches.
