Russian Missiles and Drones Target Ukrainian Energy Grid, Killing Seven People

Russia launched one of its heaviest combined attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in months, striking Kyiv and other regions with missiles and drones as the country prepares for winter. Ukrainian officials reported seven deaths nationwide, including a child, with four people killed in and around the capital; homes, businesses and energy facilities were damaged. Emergency power cuts were imposed in Kyiv and nearby regions, and DTEK said it restored electricity to about 8,000 households. Ukraine said it intercepted 155 of 188 drones and five missiles, while officials warned that ballistic missiles and newer jet-powered drones are challenging its air defenses. A drone crossed into Moldova and exploded, and Romania and Poland scrambled military aircraft amid heightened regional alerts.
Ukrenergo said the emergency power cuts in Kyiv and three surrounding regions were the first imposed in the capital since spring.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its strikes also targeted a communications facility in Kyiv and port infrastructure in Izmail, in southwestern Ukraine.
Ukraine’s foreign minister said the escalation had brought days of almost uninterrupted air-raid alerts, with jet-powered drones used during the day and ballistic and cruise missiles at night.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had recaptured 176 square kilometres since the start of a counteroffensive near Lyman, and that the operation had helped prevent Russian forces from breaking through defensive lines around Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
