Communities Launch Major Food Drives and Million-Meal Pack Events to Fight Hunger

Community groups and volunteers are organizing several efforts to address hunger. In Pickaway County, Ohio, 23 organizations will collect nonperishable food and toiletries for the Community Cupboards’ October 7 drive, with volunteers sorting donations for distribution through 25 outdoor pantry boxes. Ontario Provincial Police Auxiliary members will hold a province-wide food drive on October 3, inviting residents to donate food and essential goods at local collection sites for area food banks. In West Allis, Wisconsin, volunteers are being recruited to pack one million jambalaya meals on November 5 for local food banks and families.
Pickaway County’s Community Cupboards program is entirely volunteer-operated and uses a donated distribution facility at Circleville Presbyterian Church, with no administrative expenses.
The Ontario food drive is part of an OPP Auxiliary program established in 1960; more than 500 auxiliary members now serve communities across the province. A/auxiliary staff sergeant Matthew Manor said the drive reflects members “showing up for their communities when it matters.”
The West Allis meal pack is being organized by Pick 'n Save, Metro Market and Mariano’s in collaboration with U.S. Hunger and the Kroger Foundation; volunteers can choose among three shifts or sign up for more than one.
