CNN Chief Mark Thompson May Remain in Role Following Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger Talks

CNN CEO Mark Thompson may stay on as CEO under the combined Paramount-Warner Bros. deal, despite ongoing contract discussions between Ellison and Thompson. Thompson is seeking autonomy over the global news brand, including on editorial matters, and an "editorial independence board" once the deal closes. However, there is no guarantee that they can agree on a new deal. If successful, this would relieve many CNN talent who had been anticipating a significant overhaul at the channel post-merger. No change in leadership is expected at deal close, with Thompson's current contract running into next year. While CNN's ratings have been challenged in recent years, it remains a profitable business for the combined company.
