Rachel Jupp takes charge of BBC News as the corporation faces major financial pressures.

Jupp was chosen from a four-person shortlist that also included acting BBC News leader Jonathan Munro, Channel 4 News editor Esme Wren and interim BBC director of nations Rhuanedd Richards.
Jonathan Munro had led BBC News for the 11 months since Turness’s departure; he is due to return to his substantive roles as deputy director of news and BBC News global director when Jupp starts.
Before her appointment, Jupp had led the BBC’s editorial work on generative AI from the United States.
BBC News says it broadcasts in more than 40 languages to around half a billion people worldwide, and that seven in 10 UK adults use its news service each week.
Rachel Jupp has been appointed director of BBC News and Current Affairs, taking charge of a 4,500-person operation that reaches half a billion people worldwide The Guardian. Jupp, the former editor of Panorama, replaces Deborah Turness, who resigned last November following controversy over how the program edited a Donald Trump speech Editor & Publisher.
The appointment comes as the BBC faces severe financial strain, with plans to cut 1,800 to 2,000 jobs across the corporation and close about 550 positions in its news division The Wrap. Jupp's salary has been reported at £400,000 annually.
The BBC's news division spent nearly a year in limbo after Turness stepped down over the Panorama editing scandal The Independent. Jonathan Munro served as acting leader during this period, keeping the operation running while the BBC conducted its search for a permanent director The Wrap.
Jupp was selected from a shortlist that included Munro, Channel 4 News editor Esme Wren, and Rhuanedd Richards, the interim BBC director of nations The Wrap. Her experience includes editing Panorama, serving as deputy editor of Newsnight, and most recently directing BBC News documentaries and long-form journalism The Guardian.
BBC Director-General Matt Brittin praised Jupp's "editorial judgment and leadership." Jupp pledged to champion "independent, impartial journalism" and work to strengthen public trust The Guardian. The appointment comes amid broader concerns about declining trust in mainstream television news coverage.
BBC News broadcasts in more than 40 languages and serves around half a billion people worldwide The Wrap. Seven in 10 UK adults use the BBC news service each week. Jupp must now manage this vast operation while navigating deep financial cuts that will reshape the division.
