Hero K-9 and Rescue Teams Locate Three Missing Children in Colorado

The family was a large group visiting from the Denver area, and deputies were dispatched to the Midland Bike Trail at about 11 a.m., roughly two hours after the children were first noticed missing.
One report said Arch picked up the campsite scent “almost immediately”; rescuers used the direction he indicated to guide foot teams toward a higher vantage point for a visual search.
The search teams included foot patrols conducting grid searches, alongside the drones and helicopter.
Three children—a 9-year-old and two 6-year-olds—wandered away from their family's campsite near Buena Vista, Colorado on September 26, sparking a swift rescue operation. After relatives searched for about two hours without finding them, Chaffee County Sheriff's Office launched a full search-and-rescue effort involving foot teams, drones, and a helicopter. All three children were reunited with their family around 2 p.m., unharmed.
A canine deputy named Arch proved crucial to the rescue. The K-9 officer picked up the children's scent at the campsite almost immediately, guiding rescuers to higher ground where teams spotted the children about 1.5 miles away from camp. Chaffee County officials praised Arch and the search-and-rescue volunteers for their rapid response.
The family, visiting from the Denver area, was camping near the Midland Bike Trail east of Buena Vista when the children disappeared. Relatives noticed the three kids missing and searched the area for roughly two hours on their own. Around 11 a.m., Chaffee County deputies were called to the scene to launch an organized search effort.
K-9 deputy Arch became the key to finding the missing children. According to local reports, the dog picked up the children's scent at the campsite almost immediately. Rescuers used the direction Arch indicated to guide foot teams toward higher ground, where they could conduct a wider visual search across the terrain.
The rescue operation combined several search methods. Foot patrols conducted grid searches of the surrounding area. Search and Rescue volunteers also deployed drones and a helicopter to scan from above. This multi-pronged approach allowed teams to spot the children from higher vantage points about 1.5 miles from the campsite.
The three children were located and reunited with their family around 2 p.m. on September 26. None of them suffered injuries during their time away from camp. Chaffee County Sheriff's Office commended both the canine deputy and all volunteers involved, highlighting how quick action and teamwork prevented a tragedy.
