Hargreaves Lansdown Begins Offering Bitcoin and Ether ETNs to UK Investors

The rollout began on September 3, 2026, with nine Bitcoin and Ether ETNs available to roughly 2 million HL customers via the Advanced Investing service.
HL classifies crypto ETNs as Restricted Mass Market Investments, requiring customers to meet eligibility checks and complete an appropriateness assessment, plus a 24-hour cooling-off period.
Chief Product Officer Doug Abbott said: "We want clients to understand what they are investing in."
CoinShares’ Bitcoin ETP (BITC) and Ethereum ETP (ETHE) on HL are physically backed by a custodian, expanding the platform’s regulated crypto exposure.
HL was the last major UK platform to offer crypto ETNs, with peers having already offered them since the FCA reopened retail access in 2025, a move some view as capitulation to market demand.
Hargreaves Lansdown, the UK's largest investment platform, has opened Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded notes to about 2 million clients, marking a major reversal for a firm that once resisted crypto trading CoinGabbar. The rollout began September 3, 2026, via HL's Advanced Investing service and includes nine ETNs from major issuers including BlackRock, WisdomTree, 21Shares, Invesco, CoinShares, and Bitwise Crypto.news.
Investors must pass an appropriateness assessment and observe a 24-hour cooling-off period. Annual fees range from 0% to 0.35%, with CoinShares' Bitcoin and Ether products physically backed by custodians Finance Feeds. The move signals HL's capitulation to market demand after the FCA reopened retail crypto access in 2025.
Hargreaves Lansdown had previously said Bitcoin is not an asset class and resisted crypto offerings. The platform becomes the last major UK investment service to launch crypto ETNs, after competitors including interactive platforms offered them following the FCA's 2025 reopening Finance Feeds. Chief Product Officer Doug Abbott stated: "We want clients to understand what they are investing in."
HL's offering spans Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded notes from six major financial institutions Crypto.news. The products are classified as Restricted Mass Market Investments, requiring customers to meet eligibility checks before trading. Annual management fees range from 0% to 0.35%, depending on the issuer and product structure Grafa.
CoinShares' Bitcoin ETP (BITC) and Ethereum ETP (ETHE) listed on HL are physically backed by custodians, meaning investors hold actual digital assets rather than derivatives Tron Weekly. All new crypto investors must complete an appropriateness assessment and wait 24 hours before executing trades, protecting retail clients from rash decisions CoinGabbar.
HL's shift reflects the UK's increasingly favorable regulatory environment for digital assets and a push to retain customers moving to competing platforms offering crypto products Finance Feeds. The reversal is largely viewed as practical capitulation to market demand rather than a wholesale endorsement of crypto as an investment. The expansion deepens retail access to regulated Bitcoin and Ether exposure across Britain's largest investment platform.
