Indian Air Force Delivers 28 Tonnes of Relief to Flood-Hit Saran

The Indian Air Force is airlifting food and other relief supplies to flood-hit, road-inaccessible areas of Bihar’s Saran district as authorities respond to flooding linked to heavy flows and breaches along the Gandak River. The Bihar government said IAF helicopters made 15 sorties, delivering more than 28 tonnes of food, including over 5,600 ration packets. A separate report of an October 2 mission said IAF Mi-17 V5 helicopters delivered 10 tonnes of relief supplies to five locations in Saran. State and central agencies are coordinating the response and using alternative transport while monitoring affected areas.
The October 2 IAF mission operated from Patna and delivered supplies to five named locations in Saran district: Chakia, Prithvipur, Satjoda, Karcholia and Maker.
The Water Resources Department said the Gandak Barrage released 543,500 cusecs at 6 a.m. on September 28; discharge remained above 500,000 cusecs for 13 hours and above 400,000 cusecs for 32 hours.
Despite the barrage discharge being below the 2024 peak, the Gandak reached a record 91.25 metres at the Bagaha gauge site—0.35 metres above the previous high.
The Water Resources Department attributed the already elevated downstream river levels in part to significant rainfall on September 26 and 27 in West Champaran, East Champaran and Gopalganj.
