Illinois Governor and NFL Commissioner Meet to Discuss Bears Stadium Future

Thursday’s meeting was the first known in-person meeting between Pritzker and Goodell; the two had communicated by calls and text messages over the preceding nine months.
The NFL said it appreciated the meeting and warned that “Timely action is essential” as the Bears seek a long-term stadium solution for the club and its fans.
Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said he did not know whether the Bears would play in Hammond, but argued the team should choose Indiana over what he called “slower-footed” Illinois.
Pat Ryan has played a role in facilitating recent discussions among the Bears, the NFL and Illinois leaders, according to a person familiar with Thursday’s meeting; Ryan is also a Bears board member.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker met Thursday with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Bears minority owner Pat Ryan to discuss keeping the team in Illinois, calling it a productive conversation focused on protecting taxpayers. Politico reported the gathering included top state legislative leaders and marked the first known in-person meeting between Pritzker and Goodell after nine months of calls and texts.
The talks intensify pressure to act quickly. The NFL warned that timely action is essential as the Bears explore stadium options in Hammond, Indiana, after Illinois lawmakers failed to pass stadium legislation this spring. Capitol News Illinois reported that both Chicago and Arlington Heights remain possible Illinois sites under discussion.
Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said he did not know if the Bears would play in Hammond but pushed them to choose Indiana. WIBC reported Braun called Illinois "slower-footed" in addressing the team's stadium needs. The competition underscores Illinois' risk of losing the franchise if lawmakers cannot reach a deal.
Property-tax certainty has become central to negotiations. Illinois officials have proposed giving the Bears tax breaks for a stadium project in Arlington Heights, a Chicago suburb. A future proposal could leave the door open to either Chicago or Arlington Heights, creating multiple paths forward.
Bears minority owner Pat Ryan has played a key role in facilitating recent talks among the team, the NFL, and Illinois leaders. Capitol News Illinois reported Ryan, who sits on the Bears board, has helped bring all parties together. His position allows him to speak for both the franchise and state interests.
Ryan's involvement signals the Bears want to find a solution in Illinois. His presence at Thursday's meeting with Pritzker and Goodell shows the team is engaging seriously with state officials. This contrasts with the Bears' public pursuit of Indiana options.
Politico reported that Pritzker and lawmakers have pointed to Illinois' fall veto session as a moment to push forward. The session gives legislators another chance to pass stadium legislation after the spring session stalled. However, any bill would need sufficient support in the General Assembly to succeed.
The next few months are crucial for Illinois. If lawmakers can build consensus before fall, they may keep the Bears from moving to Indiana. Delays could push the team toward Hammond and away from its home state.
