Petersen last played meaningful NHL minutes during the 2023-24 season with Philadelphia, where he struggled with a 3.90 GAA in five games. Pro Hockey Rumors noted he has spent the last two years primarily in the AHL, developing his game away from the NHL spotlight. His current stint with Iowa showed improvement, posting more respectable numbers than his final NHL appearance.

The 31-year-old was originally drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 2013 and has logged 248 career AHL games across seven seasons. In his prime with Los Angeles during 2021-22, Petersen appeared in 37 games and went 20-14-2 with a .895 save percentage and 2.89 GAA, showing he can perform at the NHL level.

Washington's Crowded Goaltending Competition

The Capitals are bringing in five goaltenders to compete in training camp, signaling they are not fully settled on their netminding situation. Gino Hard reported that Petersen's addition gives Washington multiple options as they prepare for the 2026-27 season.
