Flydubai Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia After Cockpit Attack

Flydubai Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with about 174 passengers, made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after a cockpit confrontation. Reports allege the co-pilot attacked the captain and say the aircraft plunged thousands of feet before the crew regained control, with passengers and off-duty pilots reportedly helping intervene. The aircraft transmitted emergency and unlawful-interference codes, prompting fears of a hijacking and the scrambling of Israeli fighter jets. Passengers and crew were reported safe, while both pilots were injured and received medical care. Authorities are investigating; the motive and precise sequence of events remain unclear.
Captain Smit Machchhar had logged about 9,750 hours flying Boeing 737 aircraft, including more than 6,400 hours as pilot-in-command; he joined Flydubai in 2022 after 11 years with SpiceJet.
Passenger Daniel told Israel’s Channel 12 that he heard a struggle near the cockpit and saw the door slightly open, then the aircraft went sharply nose-down and began spinning.
The Street reported that 166 of the 174 passengers were Israelis and that the pilots were Omani and Emirati nationals.
The Street reported that Flydubai dispatched emergency teams and two replacement aircraft to bring passengers onward to Tel Aviv, and that the pilot suspected of stabbing the captain was arrested and questioned by Saudi authorities.
