Wells Fargo Cuts S&P 500 Target, Warns Downside

Wells Fargo estimated that equities account for 72% of investor portfolios, the highest allocation since 1969, compared with its preferred allocation of about 60% given current bond yields.
The bank said 2027 S&P 500 earnings estimates are about 42% above the typical trendline for comparable stages of the cycle—the widest such gap since the 1950s—raising questions about how sustainable current profit expectations are.
Active data-center moratoriums have increased 175% nationally over the past three months, according to Ohsung Kwon, adding to the political and local resistance facing technology companies.
Wells Fargo also identified pressure involving the Korean won as a risk for semiconductor companies, alongside its broader concerns about the late-stage AI investment cycle.
At Monday’s close, the S&P 500 was at 7,619.98; Wells Fargo’s downside scenarios would put the index near 7,239 after a 5% decline or 6,858 after a 10% decline.
Wells Fargo slashed its year-end S&P 500 target to 7,700 from 7,950, signaling that stocks may have little room to run Wells Fargo. Chief strategist Ohsung Kwon warned the index could first suffer a 5% to 10% pullback as the market enters late-cycle territory, driven by elevated valuations, heavy equity positioning, and high Treasury yields.
The downgrade came despite Wells Fargo raising its earnings forecasts for 2027 and 2028 TS2 Tech. Investors currently hold 72% of their portfolios in equities—the highest share since 1969—compared with Wells Fargo's preferred 60% allocation given current bond yields, signaling overexposure to risk.
Wells Fargo downgraded technology to equal weight, citing slowing artificial-intelligence capital spending, political resistance to data centers, and late-cycle semiconductor risks Briefs. Active data-center moratoriums have jumped 175% nationally over three months, adding pressure on chip stocks.
Semiconductor stocks may retest their July lows, the bank warned. Wells Fargo now prefers software over semiconductors and recommends cutting exposure to the sector. Pressure from the Korean won presents another headwind for chip makers facing margin compression.
Wells Fargo flagged a major red flag: 2027 S&P 500 earnings estimates sit 42% above the typical trendline for this stage of the cycle TS2 Tech. This is the widest such gap since the 1950s, raising serious questions about whether investors are pricing in earnings that may never materialize.
The disconnect suggests profit growth expectations are stretched. If earnings fail to keep pace with current forecasts, valuations could compress sharply, creating downside risk even if the economy avoids recession.
Wells Fargo upgraded healthcare to overweight, betting that potential Democratic gains in midterm elections could restore enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies Briefs. That would support hospitals and exchange-linked insurers, providing a defensive hedge in a late-cycle environment.
The rotation reflects Wells Fargo's defensive positioning. As growth stocks face headwinds, healthcare offers both stability and upside from policy tailwinds, making it an attractive shelter for cautious investors.
At Monday's close of 7,619.98, Wells Fargo's bear cases paint a grim picture TS2 Tech. A 5% pullback would put the index near 7,239, while a 10% decline would drive it to 6,858. Bank of America separately raised its S&P 500 projection but also cautioned that seasonal weakness and normal pullbacks remain possible.
