UNEP Report Warns Global Temperatures Will Temporarily Breach 1.5°C Threshold Soon

UNEP India head Balakrishna Pisupati said South Asia faces overlapping demographic pressures, income inequality, unequal access to technology and the challenges of a just transition, while being disproportionately exposed to global warming.
Pisupati described separate climate “clocks” — including heat, glaciers, sea level, ecosystems and human impacts — that move at different speeds. Heat may respond relatively quickly when warming declines, while glaciers can continue changing even after temperatures fall.
The report identifies practical barriers to large-scale carbon removal, including competition between reforestation and agriculture for land, wildfires and the effects of climate change itself. It also notes that only 12 carbon-removal projects storing carbon underground have been completed so far.
The carbon-storage challenge could extend beyond building new projects: the report says existing storage capacity in sedimentary basins could be exhausted by 2200 even if the world were only trying to maintain net-zero emissions.
A UN official cautioned that decades of technological progress cannot fully reverse climate change, warning that “things may not return to normal,” underscoring the distinction between impacts that can be reversed and those that may become permanent.
The world is on track to temporarily breach the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C warming threshold within the next few years, according to a new UNEP report. But the United Nations Environment Programme says the goal isn't dead — it's recoverable if nations act fast. The key: slash emissions immediately, limit peak warming to about 1.8°C, then return below 1.5°C before 2100.
Under current policies, warming could hit 2.6°C by century's end, unleashing cascading risks: extreme weather, ecosystem collapse, sea-level rise, and potentially irreversible changes. UN officials warn that some climate damage — especially to glaciers and vulnerable coasts — may persist for generations, even after temperatures stabilize.
