Seventeen People, Mostly Catholic Pilgrims, Killed in Kenya Highway Crash

At least 17 people, most of them Catholic pilgrims, died in a road crash on Kenya's Nairobi-Mombasa Highway after midnight on Saturday. The Frontier Post reported that a truck driver failed to safely overtake another truck, triggering a collision that involved multiple vehicles including a van carrying worshippers headed to a prayer site in Nakuru County, west of Nairobi. The van's driver and 16 passengers, most of them women, died at the scene.
The victims were members of St. Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church in Mikindani Parish, Uzalendon News reported. Kenya's National Transport and Safety Authority warned motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking on the stretch, which has long been flagged as a high-risk accident area, or "black spot," with repeated safety recommendations going unheeded.
The crash occurred just after midnight Saturday on the highway linking Nairobi and the coastal city of Mombasa. V2 Radio reported that a truck driver attempted to pass another truck but failed to complete the dangerous maneuver safely. The failed overtake caused the truck to collide with several other vehicles on the road. The van carrying Catholic pilgrims took the brunt of the impact, with all 17 occupants perishing at the scene.
The victims were on their way to a designated prayer site in Nakuru County, west of Nairobi, when the crash occurred. Radio Royal confirmed that the group consisted mainly of women from their local parish. They had departed from Mikindani Parish as part of a religious pilgrimage, a common practice among Catholic communities in Kenya. The tragedy marked one of the deadliest single-vehicle incidents in the region in recent months.
The section of highway where the crash occurred has long been identified as a "black spot" — a term used for accident-prone road segments. Kenya's National Transport and Safety Authority has issued repeated warnings urging drivers to exercise extreme caution and avoid risky overtaking maneuvers on this stretch. Manx Radio noted that authorities have made multiple safety recommendations for the area, yet dangerous driving practices persist, contributing to the ongoing toll of preventable deaths.
