Prime Video Cancels Emmy-Nominated Spider-Noir After One Season Despite Strong Viewership

The episodes premiered on MGM+ on May 25 before being released all at once on Prime Video two days later, rather than debuting on Prime Video first.
The ensemble cast included Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson alongside Nicolas Cage.
Nicolas Cage said the first season works as a self-contained story: “Whether [Season 2] happens or not, all of us achieved what we set out to do, and it works on its own. We’ll see what happens.”
Despite the cancellation, Deadline reported that Amazon and Sony are continuing to develop multiple projects, with one reportedly nearing a series order.
Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot served as showrunners and executive producers, while Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and former Sony executive Amy Pascal were also executive producers.
Prime Video has canceled Spider-Noir after one eight-episode season, ending Nicolas Cage's first regular television role Variety. The series, which premiered on MGM+ in May before moving to Prime Video, featured Cage as Ben Reilly, a private investigator and secret superhero in a 1930s noir New York. Despite strong reviews, a 90% audience score, and 2.6 billion viewing minutes in its first six weeks, Deadline reported the show lacked sustained viewership relative to its expensive production costs.
The cancellation arrives as Spider-Noir heads into the Creative Arts Emmys with 11 nominations, including recognition for production design, visual effects, sound, and stunts TVNewsCheck. Nicolas Cage said the first season works as a complete story: 'Whether Season 2 happens or not, all of us achieved what we set out to do, and it works on its own.' Amazon and Sony are continuing to develop other projects under their partnership.
Spider-Noir offered viewers something rare: color and black-and-white viewing options for a superhero show set in an alternate 1930s MEAWW. The ensemble cast included Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston, and Brendan Gleeson alongside Cage. The series premiered on MGM+ on May 25 before dropping all eight episodes on Prime Video two days later.
The show opened to strong critical reception and audience enthusiasm. Those 2.6 billion viewing minutes in six weeks suggested real engagement Variety. Yet Amazon's decision makers saw a different picture: the viewership numbers didn't justify the production budget over the long term, triggering the cancellation decision.
Spider-Noir marked Nicolas Cage's first-ever starring role in a regular television series Variety. The 1930s noir aesthetic and Marvel Comics source material gave Cage a chance to explore a different type of character: Ben Reilly, a street-level detective with secret superpowers. Showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot built the season as a self-contained story.
Cage acknowledged the cancellation with grace, suggesting the eight episodes delivered a complete narrative arc. He told outlets that whether Season 2 happens matters less than knowing the team accomplished their creative goals. That attitude aligns with how he framed the show's ending: a story that stands on its own terms Yahoo News
The timing stings: Spider-Noir earned 11 nominations for the Creative Arts Emmys, recognizing production design, visual effects, sound, and stunts TVNewsCheck. Industry recognition arrived just as Prime Video pulled the plug. The accolades signal that critics and industry voters valued the craftsmanship, even if subscriber metrics disappointed executives.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the Spider-Verse producers behind the visually inventive films, served as executive producers alongside former Sony executive Amy Pascal Variety. Their involvement brought prestige and creative firepower. Despite that star power, the numbers game won out over artistry and reviews.
The Spider-Noir cancellation doesn't end the Amazon-Sony partnership Deadline. The two companies are continuing to develop multiple projects together, with one reportedly nearing a series order. No specific reason for Spider-Noir's cancellation was publicly disclosed by either studio.
The decision reflects a broader shift in streaming strategy: prestige productions and strong reviews matter less than sustained viewer engagement relative to cost. Spider-Noir became another casualty of that math, regardless of its Emmy nominations or Nicolas Cage's acclaimed performance Variety.
