Key Points
1
Containment figures for the Feliz Fire varied within hours: CAL FIRE reported 0% containment around 6:30 p.m., but a San Luis Obispo/CAL FIRE update later indicated about 5% containment by Saturday evening, illustrating rapidly evolving and sometimes conflicting assessments.
2
Evacuation zones and affected areas were precisely defined: MEN-2HOP04 (including Saracen Vineyards, Dancing Crow Vineyards, Jeriko Estates, Milovina Vineyards and Bells Echo Vineyard) and MEN-2UKV29 were issued, with orders extending to the Highway 101 corridor and Hopland.
3
Evacuation and shelter logistics were established, including a temporary dispersal point at the Mendocino County Office of Education in Ukiah, a pet shelter at the Mendocino County Animal Shelter, and a livestock shelter at the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds in Ukiah.

The weather-driven fire behavior and response featured gusty winds and extreme heat, with reports of gusts around 25 mph, temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, and extensive airborne resources including three night-flying helicopters and retardant drops, along with a visible smoke plume extending toward northern Sonoma County (Cloverdale area).
A fast-moving wildfire near Hopland in Mendocino County exploded from 40 acres to more than 500 acres in a matter of hours on Saturday, forcing urgent evacuation orders and closing portions of Highway 101, according to ABC7 News. The Feliz Fire started around 3:40 p.m. near Feliz Creek Road and reached roughly 501 acres by 5:47 p.m., with containment sitting at 0% through most of the evening.
By Saturday evening, San Luis Obispo Tribune reported containment had inched up to about 5%, though 95% of the fire remained uncontrolled. Temperatures topped 100°F and wind gusts reached around 25 mph, driving the blaze eastward toward and across the highway as a smoke plume stretched toward Cloverdale in northern Sonoma County.
Fire Doubles Then Doubles Again Within Two Hours
The Feliz Fire ignited near Feliz Creek Road at roughly 3:40 p.m. Within about an hour, it had jumped from 40 acres to more than 200 acres. By 5:47 p.m., CAL FIRE reported the fire had hit 501 acres, according to ABC7 News. That growth rate — more than 12 times its original size in under two hours — stunned local officials.
Gusty winds pushed embers ahead of the main fire front, sparking spot fires in dry grass and oak woodlands. The terrain is hilly, which lets wind-driven fires move fast upslope. CAL FIRE and local fire districts deployed retardant drops and three night-flying helicopters to slow the eastern spread, according to NY Post.
Evacuation Orders Cover Vineyards, Highway Corridor, and Hopland
The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office issued evacuation orders for two specific zones. Zone MEN-2HOP04 covered Saracina Vineyards, Dancing Crow Vineyards, Jeriko Estates, Milovina Vineyards, and Bells Echo Vineyard. Zone MEN-2UKV29 extended the orders southeast of Ukiah into the Highway 101 corridor, according to ABC7 News.
Evacuation warnings also went out for downtown Hopland. Residents were told to be ready to leave at a moment's notice. A temporary dispersal point opened at the Mendocino County Office of Education in Ukiah. Pet owners could bring animals to the Mendocino County Animal Shelter. Livestock could go to the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds, also in Ukiah, NY Post reported.
Heat, Wind, and Dry Brush Created Explosive Conditions
Fire officials said extreme weather made the Feliz Fire especially dangerous. Temperatures exceeded 100°F in the Hopland area. Wind gusts hit around 25 mph. Low humidity and parched grasses created what firefighters call a high fire-weather environment. These conditions combined to push the fire faster than crews could build containment lines, according to Fresno Bee.
CAL FIRE warned that containment does not equal safety. Even with a small portion of the fire's perimeter held, the interior was still actively burning. The cause of the fire remained under investigation. Conditions were expected to stay volatile as heat and wind lingered into the night.
Containment Numbers Shifted Hourly as Response Grew
CAL FIRE reported 0% containment at around 6:30 p.m. Just hours later, Modesto Bee and San Luis Obispo Tribune reported the number had climbed to 5%. Fire officials cautioned that early containment figures can shift quickly as crews gain or lose ground. Multiple mutual aid partners joined CAL FIRE and local districts on the fireline.
Airborne resources played a key role. Three night-flying helicopters stayed active after dark, a resource not always available on wildfires. Retardant drops helped slow the fire's eastern push. Officials said more resources were being staged as the incident continued to develop Saturday night.
