Italy's UniCredit Evaluates Technology Partners to Build Out Digital Asset and Tokenization Infrastructure

UniCredit issued Italy’s first tokenized minibond in December 2025, valued at €5 million and recorded on a public blockchain.
In July 2025, UniCredit introduced a five-year, dollar-denominated structured certificate linked to BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF. The product offered full capital protection at maturity and gave professional investors Bitcoin-linked exposure without requiring them to hold cryptocurrency directly.
UniCredit expanded its digital-finance footprint by investing €4 million for a 16% stake in Italian tokenization platform BlockInvest in April 2026, according to one report.
The bank also acquired a minority stake in VC Trade, a German lending-markets platform, as part of efforts to expand its digital-capital-markets capabilities.
A potential partnership could allow UniCredit to retain client onboarding, product design, pricing and compliance while outsourcing specialized functions such as wallet technology, asset safekeeping or trade execution; however, the reported discussions do not establish that this operating model has been selected.
UniCredit, Italy's second-largest bank, is evaluating technology partners to build infrastructure for digital-asset custody, brokerage, trading and tokenized investment products, Bitcoin Magazine reported. The discussions remain preliminary with no provider, launch date or final product announced, but the move would expand the bank's existing crypto efforts and reflect broader European ambitions to enter digital assets as regulatory clarity improves.
The bank is considering stablecoin applications and stablecoin-based fixed-income securities as part of the initiative, Crypto Times noted. UniCredit could retain client onboarding, product design and compliance while outsourcing specialized functions like wallet technology and asset safekeeping to a partner.
UniCredit has already made significant moves into tokenization and crypto-linked products. In December 2025, the bank issued Italy's first tokenized minibond valued at €5 million and recorded on a public blockchain, Bloomberg Bit reported. In July 2025, UniCredit introduced a five-year, dollar-denominated structured certificate linked to BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF that offered full capital protection and gave professional investors Bitcoin exposure without holding cryptocurrency directly.

The bank also acquired a minority stake in VC Trade, a German lending-markets platform, to expand digital-capital-markets capabilities, Cointimes reported. These moves position UniCredit as an active player in Europe's emerging tokenization ecosystem.
UniCredit participates in Qivalis, a consortium developing a euro-denominated stablecoin aimed at streamlining payments and settlements across Europe. The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets framework provides greater regulatory clarity, encouraging banks to enter the space. Coindoo noted that the key question remains whether UniCredit will retain custody or outsource it entirely to a technology partner.
