Coinbase Adds Armstrong to Board Amid Canada Expansion

Armstrong's Coinbase board appointment becomes effective on September 1, 2026, and Coinbase expanded its board from nine to ten directors as part of the process.
Armstrong will serve on the Audit and Compliance Committee and is slated to serve through the 2027 annual shareholder meeting (or until a successor is chosen).
During his career at Morgan Stanley, Armstrong helped lead the global technology M&A practice and rose to vice chairman of investment banking; Morgan Stanley also advised Musk on the 2022 Twitter/X acquisition.
In Canada, Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives trading via Coinbase Financial Markets, offering 23 crypto futures (perpetual and dated) across assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana, plus five commodity futures and the Coinbase 50 Index; the contracts are nano-sized with up to 10x leverage and access is limited to eligible Canadians (e.g., those with at least $5 million in net financial assets or registered advisers/dealers; Coinbase says this makes it the first major crypto-native platform to offer direct native crypto futures in Canada.
Coinbase has appointed Anthony Armstrong, a veteran banker and former CFO of Elon Musk's xAI and X Corp., to its board of directors, effective September 1, 2026 CFO Dive. The move expands Coinbase's board from nine to ten members and adds Armstrong to the Audit and Compliance Committee. Armstrong spent nearly a decade at Morgan Stanley, where he helped lead the global technology M&A practice and became vice chairman of investment banking CFO Dive. His career also includes senior roles in the Department of Government Efficiency. Coinbase said Armstrong brings a rare combination of Wall Street deal-making, technology expertise, and government experience. The company emphasized there are no related-party conflicts and Armstrong will receive standard non-employee director compensation Yahoo Finance.
Before joining Coinbase's board, Armstrong served as CFO of both xAI and X Corp., Elon Musk's artificial intelligence and social media ventures Yahoo Finance. His tenure at these companies underscores his experience scaling large technology operations. Morgan Stanley previously advised Musk on the 2022 acquisition of Twitter, which became X Corp., giving Armstrong exposure to complex, high-stakes transactions in the tech sector CFO Dive.
