Former Italy striker Alberto Gilardino returns to Parma as new head coach.

Parma have appointed Alberto Gilardino as head coach after parting ways with Carlos Cuesta by mutual agreement. The former Italy international returns to the club where he starred as a player from 2002 to 2005, and is expected to take charge immediately. Gilardino brings Serie A coaching experience from Genoa, which he guided to promotion and then kept in the top flight, as well as a recent spell at Pisa. Parma, currently 15th after five league games, have turned to his familiarity with the club and experience as they seek to improve their form and develop the squad.
Parma’s proposed deal for Gilardino is for one year, through June 2027, with the club holding a unilateral option for an additional season.
Cuesta’s departure reportedly followed a difference of views with the club over the direction of its sporting project.
Gilardino’s first match in charge is set to be a difficult away trip to Inter Milan, leaving little time to introduce his ideas; Parma’s technical staff oversaw training while the appointment was finalized.
Gilardino was part of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning team.
