Tourism Officials Urge Visitors to Stay Away From Kauai Following Hurricane Lowell

Tourism officials in Hawaii have urged visitors to stay away from Kauai as it recovers from Hurricane Lowell, which severely damaged oceanfront resorts, ripped apart roads and knocked out power on Kauai. The island, known for its tropical landscapes, waterfalls and cliffs, remains without power, with thousands of customers still without power. Tourism is the primary economic driver for the island, accounting for 4 out of every 10 jobs on the island. The hurricane's powerful storm surge buckled and washed away roads, knocked down homes and flooded resorts, causing two deaths. Democratic Gov. Josh Green has requested a major disaster declaration from President Donald Trump for Kauai and Maui counties.
