The commemorative design includes a portrait of President Trump on an interior page alongside the Declaration of Independence, with the exterior cover redesigned to feature gold lettering and an inverted layout; the back cover bears a gold laminate American flag with the number 250.
4
The Patriot Passport initiative is part of a broader set of 250th anniversary activities; State Department officials say it responds to overwhelming public demand by making 250,000 additional historic passports available, and the rollout includes redesigned cover and interior artwork celebrating the semiquincentennial.
The U.S. State Department is releasing 250,000 additional commemorative "Patriot Passports" to mark America's 250th birthday, according to Oregon Live. The limited-edition booklets are free of extra charge and feature a portrait of President Donald Trump on an interior page — the first time a living president has appeared in an official U.S. passport.
The nationwide rollout kicks off August 8 at passport agencies across the country, NJ.com reported. Applicants must show up in person — no online, mail-in, or acceptance-center applications are allowed for these commemoratives.
What the Patriot Passport Looks Like Inside and Out
The Patriot Passport is a 26-page booklet — the same size as a standard U.S. passport. The exterior cover has been redesigned with gold lettering and an inverted layout. The back cover features a gold laminate American flag stamped with the number 250, according to NBC DFW.
Inside, a portrait of President Trump sits alongside the Declaration of Independence. The design aims to link America's founding documents to the present day. Head Topics noted the artwork is meant to celebrate the country's semiquincentennial — a word meaning 250th anniversary.
In-Person Events at 27 Cities Starting August 8
The State Department will hold single-day application events at 27 passport agencies nationwide. Cities on the list include Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, New Orleans, New York, Stamford (CT), and Centennial (CO), according to NJ.com. Each event is one day only — so applicants need to plan ahead.
No other application method works for this passport. You cannot apply online, by mail, or at a consulate. The State Department says the in-person-only rule is firm, NBC DFW reported.
Trump Portrait Sparks Debate Over Passport Norms
Putting a living president's face in an official travel document is a first in U.S. history. Supporters call it a proud symbol of national identity. Critics question whether a government document should feature a sitting political figure, according to SSB Crack News.
The State Department has not addressed the controversy directly. Officials focused their public statements on demand, saying the 250,000 additional passports respond to "overwhelming public interest" in the original commemorative run, Oregon Live reported.
Patriot Passport Is Part of Broader 2026 Celebrations
The Patriot Passport is one piece of a larger wave of events planned around America's 250th birthday in 2026. The State Department framed the passport as a way for citizens to carry a piece of history with them, Head Topics reported.
The commemorative passport is free — no extra fee on top of standard passport costs. That low barrier, combined with the historic design, is likely why demand jumped fast enough to push the agency to release a second batch of 250,000 booklets, according to SSB Crack News.
